Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso shared his opinion on how the situation in Formula 1 was affected by rule changes - new technical regulations and the emergence of a ceiling on team budgets.
Alonso spent last season at Alpin, noting that the main disappointment was the numerous problems with the reliability of the car.
- The new rules were one of the reasons why I returned to Formula 1 in the first place. They were originally supposed to start in 2021, so I came back even a year early. And yes, everyone was a little disappointed when they realized that there were no fundamental changes. Only two teams are still capable of consistently winning races, as has been the case in recent years. And the gap between two or three top teams and the middle ones is still too big. In half of the races we ended up a lap behind the leader at the finish line. So no, until we have achieved the goals that Formula 1 set when changing the regulations.
- I don`t think that limiting team budgets will greatly affect the overall balance of power. More likely, technical regulations will work. Because the rules are very strict, with a lot of restrictions. Teams have little opportunity to invent something special. The leading teams are already close to the limit in developing their cars, so others will soon catch up.
- I don`t remember much about specific races. In general, everything was not bad. We were competitive on almost all tracks. The weak point was the reliability of the car. It cost me a lot of points. If you can`t fight for victories and a title, then it doesn`t matter whether you finish 2nd, 5th or 11th. The main motivation was the team`s fight for fourth place in the Constructors` Championship. But that`s not very exciting either.
- Yes, of course, several. Probably, despite the retirement, my best race of the year was Mexico. Because we performed everything perfectly, from A to Z. Or second place (in qualifying) in the rain in Canada. The race again turned out to be rather a disappointment, as we again had technical problems. So I forgot this step again.
